A Model for Brief Solitude

The ideal is 15-30 minutes (or more) for reading, praying, and listening in solitude with God each day. Sometimes that's not possible and sometimes we need little boosters through the day, so here's a model for brief solitude. Anywhere from 1-10 minutes of just being still with God.

  • A few deep breaths to clear your head and calm your body

  • Thank God for the most recent positive you experienced.

  • Listen to God by letting your mind go clear.

  • Follow His lead by talking with him about what comes to you in the silence

  • Make a note or memo if you need more time later.

  • Ask for His help to move on, focus, and give him glory in whatever you're doing next.

If your short on time you need to be creative with the when and where to get solitude into your schedule. In addition to the usual places or times, keep these suggestions in mind as opportunities to spend a little time with God using the model above.

  • While your lunch is in the microwave

  • While your waiting to pick up a kid from school (or any other ride you wait for)

  • Before a meeting or appointment

  • Any waiting room anywhere

  • Before you get out of the car (after you park safely)

  • In the shower (or any other daily morning activity)
