"He taught me how to make that fly look like it was so alive, then he helped me understand how to be a fisher of men". Geoff Moore, Best Days.
To catch a fish, you need to make the bait look like something the fish wants. These lyrics connect that same idea to sharing the Gospel through our actions and attitude. These verses make the same connection...
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 NIV http://bible.com/111/mat.5.16.NIV
"Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us." 1 Peter 2:12 NIV http://bible.com/111/1pe.2.12.NIV
It's a common topic when discussing evangelism, but I wonder if it isn't too often overlooked when it comes to Christian parenting. Let's take a moment to evaluate how our actions and attitude reflect our faith to our own families.
Do we attend church out of obligation or to check it off the list or do we go excited to receive the benefits of Christian community?
Do we attend a Bible study or small group so we can grow and learn or do we just force the kids to go to Sunday School or Confirmation?
Unending examples aside, do our actions and attitude show our kids that being a Christian is full of things we HAVE to do or things we GET to do. Are we motivated by guilt or by joy and love.
If you're reading this and feeling great about things, that's awesome, keep it up. If you're reading this and feeling guilty, I pray that instead you feel love. Because even teaching your faith to your family isn't a HAVE to. It's not about doing it right SO that God loves you, it's about doing your best BECAUSE God loves you. It's about knowing God's grace is so amazing there's no way you want your family to miss out. Try living your faith and doing church with that excitement, and let your family see the light shine through you
