My Yard Is Not Perfect

Writer's picture: Mike "Mutt" RieckMike "Mutt" Rieck

My yard is not perfect. I live in the woods, I have no HOA, no one golfs on my lawn. My yard is not perfect. I keep it mowed. I even do some weed and feed in certain areas for the one who doesn't like dandelions. My yard is not perfect. There are weeds and 18 different kinds of grass and some dirt spots. My yard is not perfect. And I'm mostly okay with that. BUT last year I spilled some gas (thank you safety spout) and made a square foot dead spot that is still there A YEAR LATER! This bothers me! It shouldn't, because my yard is not perfect, but it does.

Sometimes our lives get like that - full of so many weeds of sin that we might be sort of okay with that. But then there's the one that bothers us, weighs us down, fills us with guilt. Whether it was one bad choice or a repeat offense that we can't shake - we're sure it's so bad God can't possibly love us.

My life is not perfect. But Jesus is. And He was punished in our place. And the weeds we might be okay with and the gas spills that bother us are each by themselves enough to separate us from God, BUT instead He sees a yard made perfect by the blood of Jesus.

So we do our best. We confess our sins to God. And we shake off the guilt and know that His forgiveness is constant, recurring, and eternal because of Jesus.

Romans 5:8 ESV

[8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 John 1:7-9 ESV

[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. [8] If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 3:23-24 ESV

[23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

2 Corinthians 5:17, 21 ESV

[17] Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

[21] For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
